The Power of Self-Awareness: How to Change Your Life to Become a Better Person

Don’t be greedy with spending on your health and surrounding

We are all human. We are all getting influenced by our surrounding environment and relationships.

You have to be self-aware of what is good or bad for you. Your body talks with you. It tells you if this food is good for you, you will feel it. It’s this weird gut feeling people rely on to make decisions. This is your body and your heart telling you what to do.

It’s your unconscious talking to you, and it’s powerful and knows a lot.

For example, you are walking and you see a group of strange-looking guys on the same side of the street. Your gut feeling tells you this is an uncomfortable and dangerous situation. Listen to that feeling and change sides. Don’t risk it!

Be aware of yourself and your surrounding to:

  • not taking risks of going into dangerous situations
  • focus on your mental and physical health
  • know when it’s time for a change
  • understand what keeps you from your success
  • get away from people that don’t make your life better

Be Self-Aware and Question Your Environment

Do you know the saying: you are the average of the 5 people you spent the most time with? This also complies with the environment you live in.

Ask yourself:

  • Who am I spending the most time with?
  • Are those people giving me energy or draining me?
  • Are those people supporting me in my life goals and dreams?
  • Do they have the same or similar values for life?
  • Is my environment helping me become better?
  • Or is it keeping me from becoming happy?
  • Is my environment challenging me to become a better person?

What I like about my studies, for example, is that the projects are challenging me. I improve and learn more every semester.

Is your job or your environment doing the same for you?

Challenge yourself to improve and learn. Else life is boring.

“Challenges make you discover things about yourself that you never really knew.”

— Cicely Tyson

Change is Inevitable

“Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.”

— John C. Maxwell

Life is change. Without it, we would be bored as f*ck.

So don’t be afraid of change. Trust me your body and your mind adjust fast.

Last year, I changed my environment. I moved out of a shared flat and moved in with my boyfriend into a one-bedroom apartment. It was necessary because the flat is not made to make me happy:

  • There was no direct sun coming in.
  • No balcony,
  • No nature around us and
  • We had a lot of problems with cleaning schedules…

It was cheap and for the time being a student it was good, but it didn’t inspire me and I didn’t like living there.

Now I’m happy in our new apartment.

  • We have a great balcony to the south.
  • I can grow plants there.
  • we have a lot of nature around us.
  • And we are only two people who have the same values about a clean apartment 😉

It’s more expensive, the moving was hard, and we had some technical problems but now we are happy here. And I found my happy place on the balcony in the sun.

You cannot prevent change. Change is good.

If you don’t know where you are currently in life then you have the chance to change it.

  • If your environment is not inspiring: change it!
  • If you don’t like the city: change it!
  • If you don’t like the people you hang out with: find other people!
  • If you are unhappy in your relationship: talk with each other or move on!
  • If you don’t like your job: change it!

There are so many possibilities in this world. I know people don’t like change. We would always prefer to stay where we are because it’s comfortable. But at some point, you have to move on to grow and become better!

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”

— George Bernard Shaw

Challenge Yourself

Sometimes it’s easier to see your life as a game.

A game also gets boring if it always stays the same. There has to be some challenge to keep you hooked.

You have to do that in life too. Find yourself the next challenge. It doesn’t have to be big or immediate.

Start something new or change something!

Recently I listened to Dan Koe and Dickie Bush, and one of them was telling about him moving to a nicer apartment. He needed an upgrade in his life to have the challenge to improve and grow into it. It’s gonna be a little challenge for him to earn the money he needs for the rent every month. He needs to be ambitious and become better.

People are usually afraid of taking those steps because they have the fear of failure. This is one of the biggest fears that keep people from changing and improving.

But failure is a good thing. You learn a lot from it. If you cannot afford that apartment anymore, it’s ok you can always move to a smaller one.

The important thing is you try new things. You are trying to improve and grow. Not everything will work out but most things will and then you will be successful.

“Whatever makes you uncomfortable is your biggest opportunity for growth.”

— Bryant H. McGill

Invest in Yourself

Take a risk and invest in yourself and your future. You only have this life and this body, so be nice to yourself too.

I know we struggle with being good to ourselves. We always like to give presents and help others, but if it comes to ourselves we are greedy and not caring.

Stop that! You deserve everything good in the world. Treat yourself like a queen!

If your body needs a massage to relax and get out all the tension then get that massage! Treat yourself well!

If I achieved something I will celebrate that with a cake or a party! Celebrate yourself!

Invest in your future self!

Spend money on that interesting course. Treat yourself to a day in the spa! Get the right food in your body by investing in it. Find a nutrition coach or course to be able to understand your body.

Conclusion

Become better by challenging and investing in yourself, and listening to your gut feeling!

Question your environment! Is it helping me improve and become happy?

Don’t be afraid of change! It’s inevitable. Change for the better!

Be self-aware and you will find what is good for you and do that!

Just keep in mind that we are all human. We are not perfect, and your environment also doesn’t have to be perfect. Just question it from time to time to see if you are improving and on the right path to your goals!

“Self-awareness is a key to self-mastery.”

— Gretchen Rubin
